RwANdA, uGANdA & coNGo Sustainable Gorilla Conservation

Officials from Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) on April 5 met in Kigali to discuss cooperation on sustainable conservation of endangered mountain gorillas in the Virunga Massif. The three countries share gorilla habitat in the Virunga Massif which comprises of a series of volcanic mountains that stretch from southwest Uganda, northwest Rwanda and east DRC, covering Mgahinga Gorilla Park,Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park in Uganda, Rwanda and DRC respectively. Mountain gorillas are critically endangered with only around 880 remaining in the world, according to World Wildlife Fund.

Ugandan Tourism Minister Ephraim Kamuntu called on three countries to harness latest technologies to keep track of the gorilla’s movement patterns,strengthen habitat protection and keep records of population demographics.

RwANdA Agricultural Growth

Rwanda’s annual agriculture sector growth rate increased to 7 percent in 2017 from 4 percent the previous year,the country’s Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente said on April 3. Livestock and livestock products increased by 11 percent, food crops recorded 7 percent increment,agricultural exports increased by 2 percent while the fish sector registered 5 percent increment, said Ngirente at the parliament in Kigali,capital city of Rwanda.

A total of 165 urban rail transit lines in these cities reached a combined length of 5,033 km by the end of 2017,according to the association.

The government plans to boost agriculture production by scaling up consolidated land for crop production from the current 635,603 hectares to 980,000 hectares in 2024,irrigated land surface from current 48,508 hectares to 102,284 hectares by 2024,said the prime minister.According to him, Rwanda’s agriculture sector accounts for a third of the country’s GDP, employing about 65.8 percent of the total population.
